Clinical Characteristics of Child Psychiatric Patients Associated with Child Abuse


Abstract
Background:
@EN To investigate the child abuse & neglect in child psychiatric patients.
@ES Methods:
@EN The author classified 23 clinical cases visited child psychiatric outpatient clinic of the Chungnam National University Hospital for recent 2 years and nine months into the four categories-physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and
neglect.
@ES Results:
@EN Four kinds of child abuses(12 cases, at least 2 kinds of child abuse) were combined. Two thirds of parents were married, and one third were divorced or died, or separated, or remarried.
Economic status of all families were relatively poor or moderate but those of nine families (39%) were poor. Referrers were mainly medical doctors(14(61%0). Common psychiatric diagnoses were conduct disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder,
depression, mental retardation, post-traumatic stress disorder(especially associated with sexual assault), atypical psychosis, tic disorders. Sixteen cases(70%) were clinically improved. Only 3 cases were reported to Korean Association for the
Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN The possibility of child abuse must be considered in patients who visit child psychiatric clinic. Professionals working in each special fields must cooperate together to solve out child abuse problems.
